how to handle rain on your wedding day

You’ve spent months planning your wedding, all the little details are perfectly in place, then Mother Nature throws a curve ball at you… so what do you do?
If it rains on your wedding day, it’s considered good luck!
Bad weather is something no couple wants, but definitely something you need to think about, and plan for!

Whether you’re planning an indoor or outdoor ceremony, you still need to think about the weather and how it could impact your wedding day… making a plan, even if you don’t need it, will help you feel less stressed, more in control and free to enjoy the lead up to your big day! Here are some of my best tips for dealing with inclement weather…

BE PREPARED

If the forecast isn’t looking great, you’re gonna need more than just a few crossed fingers to get you through… and being prepared will most definitely help you feel you’re almost ready for anything.
If the rain brings cooler temps, you might like to consider pashminas , or grabbing your denim or leather jackets for your bridal party to keep cold shoulders warm!

You can also get some cozy throw rugs to hand out to guests; they can drape around their shoulders or tuck around their legs to keep snug. A stack of towels will also not go astray!
We’re not talking big bath towels here, just some small hand towels so guests can dry off a bit if they get caught out on the way in… umbrella’s are also another obvious must-have.
Clear ones will let guests shield from the rain while also being able to see the goings on with ease… and have you considered gumboots?
Depending on your location, even if the rain has temporarily stopped the ground might be quite wet & muddy so gumboots for your and your wedding tribe could be a sensible option so you can slop around getting your pics done, then slip back into your fancy kicks for the reception!

MAKE A BACKUP PLAN

I cannot stress this one enough! Truly if you don’t have some idea of where you’ll relocate to, you might really be scrambling!

If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, talk to your reception venue about options if you need to move indoors… is there an additional space you can have your ceremony? What’s the cost for that? If there’s not an additional space, can they rejig your reception space to make way for your ceremony, then move the tables back into place during cocktail hour / photo session?

In regards to your photos, these are almost ALWAYS planned to be outside!
If it’s only a light drizzle, grab your gumboots and umbrellas and head on outside!
If it’s a little more than a sprinkle, or there’s some gale force winds swirling around, again you need to consider where you could go that’s inside and dry.
It doesn’t need to be your reception venue, there might be somewhere close by that you could use for your wedding portraits… have you considered your accommodation? Or possibly another hotel? What about a museum or old library? Are there any historic buildings nearby that could be a great backdrop?
Whatever you consider, make sure to find out if you’re allowed to have photos there, if you need to book, if you need a permit and if there’s a cost!

EMBRACE IT!

I know, I know, easier said than done!
But truly, don’t let the weather ruin your perfect day!
It’s only one part of your day, and just remember what it’s all about, you & your beau.
You’ve just got to be ready to roll with the punches on this one, it’s completely out of your hands, and see point one, be like a scout and BE PREPARED!

“Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.”

NIGHT TIME PHOTOS IN THE RAIN ARE MAGICAL!

With the right lighting, night time drizzle photos are AMAZING!
Grab your love, gumboots & umbrella and go have a little moment to yourself… the shots will be truly spectacular!

So just remember; the day is about the two of you, have fun, laugh a little, and keep a towel handy!
